Although there is an intransigent claiming Java 5 Update 7 does not work with I.E. 7 in Vista x86 and x64, he is spreading false information.
Instead of download the offline install file, select the (Online Installation) on the Java web site and install Java by that method. I have done this in both Vista x86 and x64, and both work without any problems.
Do not download the offline install file. Apparently there is a conflict with the installer and Vista. As a result, when using the offline file, it appears to not completely install and causes problems with I.E. 7.

Java 5 Works in Vista x86 & x64
That's odd. I downloaded the full installer and installed it offline and had no problems whatsoever. (Java 5 update7). Perhaps it may have more to do with either having Protected Mode on or off, or UAC enabled or disabled as to why some people have been having problems with Java 5.
Since then I decided to try the new Beta Java 6, and that is also working fine.

I did the online installation. IE would open to a white screen, 100% CPU useage, and an ever increasing Commit Charge. The only way to stop it was to restart the computer. After uninstalling Java everything is back to normal.
I bugged the problem to MS, am I wasting my time to bug them the fix too?

In this case, probably.

Some posters have reported that the problem stopped when they disabled UAC

I had a similar experience. Both the online and the offline installs would install fine and I could even got to java.com and verify the installation. After rebooting IE7 would lock up whenever java was used. I downloaded the java beta and it works fine.

I have to disagree, this is not false information. Just because you may not have had problems, it does not mean there is not a problem. I just did the online installation and it screwed up my IE7. Blank page goes to not responding. Uninstalled java and IE7 now works fine.
I also had the same experience. I was able to download and install Java 6 Beta as suggested by several other posters. I seems to work without remark.

Yep the Java 6 works for me.

Your experience doesn't echo mine. I had to download the beta Java. Java 5 Update 7 caused intermittent lockups in IE7 no matter how it was installed.

I have installed it a total of 4 times with the Offline Installer, twice in x86 and twice in x64, on 2 different computers.
All 4 installations are working.

That's great. You just won a purple pony.
I'm tickled pink that it works for you. Most of the posts I've seen indicate users had mucho problems with IE until they uninstalled Java 5 and then installed Java 6 Beta 2.
As always, *your mileage may vary*.

The old Microsft 32-bit Java works fine on Vista 64 bit build 5456..
However, it only works in the 32-bit I.E.
Sun has not released a full 64-bit JRE yet with browser support.
You have exactly the same situation in Win x64/Server 2003 x64.

I was taught a long time ago that cross-posting was Gross, Uncouth, and Socially Unacceptable.
So, I try to avoid being guilty of any of those, if I can.

I compare using Beta software on a Beta OS to conducting Chemistry experiments. If you want true and accurate results, you want the least possible number of unknown variables - 1 unknown being the ideal situation.
With Beta software on a Beta OS, where do you look when something fouls up? Is it the application's fault? Is it the OS's fault? Is it a combination of both? Is it neither, and something else is causing the problem?

Actually, I bugged this and it has been confirmed by the beta team, so its no big deal, I just disabled the add ons and I can use IE 7+ without any head aches. the problem was that the released version of Java was causing problems with AERO, when an application such as iTunes 6 is running it automatically disables the Aero UI. Java 6 prevents that. -- Andre Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta "Rick" wrote in message

In a group of closely related newsgroups like this crossporting is better than multi posting. It allows everyone to see all the answers. Multiposting spreads the answers across many threads in many newsgroups. To be honest you post only needed to be posted once, probably in vista.general. It is very rare that either multi posting or crossposting are needed.
